Essential Security Software (ESS) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting all personal information that you provide. This document is to explain what information is collected in eCipher, why it is collected and how it is used.

Why am I required to provide my email address for eCipher?
When you provide your email address, eCipher checks that you are the valid owner of the email account. Then, when you send eCipher mail, your recipients can be assured they are receiving secure email from a valid sender. Likewise, when you receive eCipher mail, you can be assured the email is from a valid source.

What information does eCipher send to the ESS servers?
During eCipher activation eCipher sends your email address, a hash value of your hardware and a hash value of your eCipher password to ESS severs. Your email address is used to verify that you are the valid owner of the email account provided. ESS does not have knowledge of your specific eCipher password as only a randomized hash value is stored.

Hardware Identification: What's done with personal identifying data (PID) and your computer's information?
eCipher® "fingerprints" the computer at installation as both a registration tool and as a security measure for deactivating or revoking your unique key. The hardware license is unique to that machine and keeps others from being able to copy your eCipher hardware license or email alias(es) onto another unauthorized machine. It also prevents impersonation of an eCipher author. eCipher does not limit the amount of computers that you can view and send secure email from. To check secure email or to migrate eCipher to another machine you simply need go through the eCipher Activation process which verifies that you own your email account.

Is any of my personal identifying data (PID) stored on ESS servers as I send my eCipher® protected files (.safe) to recipients?
No, your PID is not revealed when you send eCipher protected .safe files. ESS does not have any access to .Safe file content. For additional information on sending .safe files, please see our eCipher FAQ and Quick Start Guide.
